June 2009: Konik horses in late evening light

Its June so I must be in Holland! In fact, I am embarking on my Wild Wonders of Europe mission to photograph Oostvaardersplassen, an area of extensive wetland and savannah-like grass plains that is grazed by over 1,000 Konik horses and 2,000 red deer. These ungulates were originally introduced to keep large area of grassland open and to produce a short sward suitable for the huge flocks of greylag geese that migrate here to feed and moult each summer. From just over 20 Koniks and around 70 red deer introduced during the 1980's, their numbers have increased to the present day population which is now self-regulatory. There are no large predators within the fenced area of Oostvaardersplassen so the numbers of ungulates are regulated by the availability of food, which is plentiful in summer but becomes scarcer in winter during which the herd is reduced by around 25%. During my time in the reserve, the Koniks had young foals and the stallions were engaged in battles over breeding rights as the mares come into season soon after giving birth.
